GUTTER SYSTEM PARTS & ACCESSORIES

At My Gutter Doctor, we only use the highest quality gutter accessories and materials available on the market for all gutter installation or gutter replacement projects.
The thickest size of aluminum that is currently (As of 2023)  able to be run through a gutter machine is .032 gauge. Anything thicker will not bend into shape properly. Therefore the thickest aluminum guttering material available currently is .032 gauge.
Because we use top of the line materials that are installed by experienced professionals,  your gutter system ends up working the most efficiently and ultimately lasting the longest.  For example, gutters that are properly configured and pitched correctly will cause less damages over time than gutters that were installed improperly.

K-STYLE GUTTERS

The two most common styles of gutters used on residential homes are called K-Style gutters or Half-Round gutters.  Half Round gutters are the old fashioned way of doing gutters. Therefore they are more common on historical downtown buildings and districts. Whereas K-Style gutter are the modern advancement of gutters, and are much more common.  My Gutter Doctor recommends and installs K-Style gutters because they perform better in every way, such as:
  • EFFICIENCY- K-style gutters handle water more efficiently during heavy rain and storm situations.

  • DURABILITY- The ridges make k-style gutters stronger then half round gutters. Therefore K-style are more resistant to damages and last longer overall.

  • LOWER PRICE- K-style gutters cost less then half round gutters. In fact K-style are close 20% to 40% cheaper then half-round gutters.

K-STYLE GUTTER & ACCESSORIES

It only takes a few components to fabricate and make up a K-style gutter that is ready for installation.

  • SEAMLESS K-STYLE GUTTER- A gutter that is cut to exact measurements to fit the home.
  • GUTTER HANGERS- Hangers or brackets are required to mount the gutter to the wall.
  • END CAPS- If it is a straight gutter, end caps will be needed to cap off both ends of the gutter.
  • DOWNSPOUT OUTLET- The drain hole in the gutter that water is able drain through.
  • GUTTER HANGERS / BRACKETS

There are many names and styles of gutter hangers such as gutter brackets, gutter spikes, or gutter straps. Certainly they are all tasked perform the same function of mounting (or securing) the gutters to the home. But it should be noted they are not all created equal.  For example spikes nail into the home while modern styles utilize a threaded screw system that secure the gutters in place for a very long time.
Due to the durability of threaded systems, we only use heavy duty screw in hangers for all gutter installation or gutter repair projects.

  • GUTTER END CAP

The piece that goes onto the ends of the gutter that closes (or caps) them off is called the end cap.  A straight gutter that does not go around a corner will typically have one end cap on each end of the gutter. Conversely the only time there aren’t end caps is when the end of the gutter connects to a miter to wrap around a corner. Otherwise without end caps gutters would be open ended and water would flow out through the openings.
To replace a gutter end cap properly we recommend to remove the existing end cap and any caulk before installing the new end cap. However if the end cap is set against the wall tightly the gutter will need to be removed from the wall.

  • DOWNSPOUT OUTLET

Downspout outlets are the mouth or drain hole in the gutter that the water drains through.  Every gutter system needs an outlet for a downspout. Otherwise water would fill up the gutter since it is not able to drain.

It is important to remember that the smaller the outlet, the easier it is for clogs to form in the gutter.  That’s because everything has to fit through the hole.  Therefore we always recommend the widest size outlet available for your gutter and downspouts.

DOWNSPOUTS

The part of the gutter system that directs the water from the gutters to the ground are called the downspouts.  Without downspouts the gutters would simply overflow and do more harm then good. Therefore they are a very necessary component of the gutter system.
Just as with our gutters we only use the thickest gauge aluminum available (.032) for downspouts. The downspouts that we use are technically called corrugated downspouts because they are also rigged. The ridges give the downspout more strength and durability than smooth downspouts.
In addition to standard downspouts estimates for half round downspouts can be provided on a case by case basis. However it should be noted they are typically only available in white and cost more than normal downspouts. Lastly, for a Round Downspout quote please use our Free Estimate form.

  • 2×3″ ALUMINUM DOWNSPOUTS

2×3″ downspouts are the standard size of downspout that are available to homeowners. However they are not recommended for reasons such as efficiency and clogs form easier.  Because the 2×3″ are smaller than any other size, they clog the easiest.
We typically use 2×3″ downspouts for matching up with pre-existing 2×3″ downspouts already on the home.   Otherwise we always recommend 3×4″ downspouts.
  • 3×4″ ALUMINUM DOWNSPOUTS

The larger the downspout is, the less likely it is to clog. That is why we use and recommend 3×4″ aluminum downspouts for all homes and situations. Unless you have to match other existing downspouts there is no reason not to choose 3×4″ downspouts.

At My Gutter Doctor we charge the same prices for 2×3″ downspouts as 3×4″ downspouts. And that is because we want the best results possible for all of our services.

Below is a photo that compares two 2×3″ downspouts next to one 3×4″ downspout.  Notice how the 3×4″ is almost the same size as both of the 2×3″ put together.

  • A STYLE ELBOW

Downspout  A elbows are the more common style of downspout elbow. They are shaped so that they kick out and point away from the home.  A style elbows are used when the downspouts are installed to the face of the home.

  • B STYLE ELBOW

The second most common style of downspout elbows are called B elbows. They are typically used to move the downspout over along the wall by using slants. Another common use for B Elbows is for side drops. Side drops are when the downspout goes down the side of the home instead of the face.

  • BRICK LEDGE ELBOWS

Whenever there are minor bump outs or obstacles for the downspout to get by, brick ledge elbows are often required.  Brick ledge elbows make it possible to only move the downspout over a few inches. Typically about half the distance a standard elbow would shift the downspout. Brick ledge elbows are available in A or B style.  Therefore just about any configuration of downspout is possible.

  • DOWNSPOUT STRAPS OR CLIPS

We use two types of hardware for securing the downspouts. Downspout straps and downspout clips.  The difference is downspout straps wrap around the face of the downspout and are more hidden. Whereas downspout clips are tucked behind the gutter.

  • CORRUGATED DRAIN PIPE EXTENSIONS

Sometimes downspouts need to be extended to another area before draining.  To extend downspouts we use 4″ corrugated drain pipe.

  • DRAIN TUBE ADAPTER

To properly connect a rectangular downspout to a circular drain pipe an adapter is needed. These adapters prevent leaking at the seam that occurs from mismatched parts.

  • DOWNSPOUT Y-ADAPTER

To connect two downspouts into one a downspout Y-adapter is used.

  • DOWNSPOUT FILTER

In line downspout filters feature a debris trap that is able to be manually cleaned out by the customer. We only recommend this type of product for certain situations.

  • DOWNSPOUT DIVERTER

Downspout diverters are kind of like a backwards Y-adapter, but they split one downspout into two instead of join them. They feature a lever that is able to be manually flipped to direct the water the other way. There most commonly used with rain barrels so that homeowners are able to divert the water once the barrel is full.

  • DOWNSPOUT STRAINER

Downspout strainers are basically a ball of wire that sits in the gutter outlet to block debris from entering the downspout. This is another product that we only recommend in extreme circumstances. That is because the debris clogs around them and the gutters end up needing to be cleaned more often because of the clog.

MITERS

When two sections come together to form a corner they are joined together with a miter. Miters cover up the seams from the two gutter sections and then are sealed with gutter sealants. Therefore everything is water tight.
Miters come in a variety of options. There are the two types of miters called box miters and strip miters. In addition to the two types we also have inside-corner and outside-corners, and even bay miters.
When installing new gutter systems on the home, miters are a matter of preference. Our estimates typically include box style miters. But if you prefer strip style just let us know.
  • BOX MITER

Box miters are more bulky in appearance then strip miters as the gutter sections  fit inside of the miter.
outside and inside box miters
  • STRIP MITER

Strip style miters are more of a strip of aluminum designed to cover the seam of the two gutter sections only. These are designed to blend in with the rest of the gutter system.

LEAF PROTECCTION / GUTTER GUARDS

Gutter Guards, Leaf Guards, Gutter Screens, etc… are all used to keep the gutter system free and clear of debris. The purpose of leaf protection is to prevent as much debris as possible into the gutter system. While still allowing as much water as possible to flow into the gutters.
We have several options of styles for leaf protection, but we typically will suggest Perforated Aluminum Gutter Covers for most of our gutter cover installation projects. Efficiency, durability, and affordability are some of the top reasons perforated aluminum or the industry standard across the board.
